While at NSU, Dr. Smith has taught courses on Germany since 1871, as well as courses covering European history from 1648 to the present. Dr. Smith's primary research focus is 20th -century German political and cultural history, particularly the First World War, and he has researched in archives and libraries throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. Dr. Smith has recently contributed an article to a volume of essays on the cultural history of the First World War, entitled World War I and the Cultures of Modernity, which is forthcoming from the University of Mississippi Press.
